Historian Mircea Eliade defines Illud Tempus as “the sacred time and space; the stories of the pure origins to which we wish to return,” what Eliade calls the myth of the eternal return. At the current profane time impacted by the toxic productivity of imperial-patriarchal capitalist culture, not only are we always wishing to have more time, but our disconnection from the place we reside is being deteriorated by our constant desire to be there, not “here.” The exhibition is a timely revisit to Eliade’s theory and gathers work by six artists: Leeay Aikawa, Kristi Chen, mihyun maria kim, SK Maston, Eve Tagny, and Ingrid Tremblay. Engaged with the parallels between time and (un)time, their work preludes Illud Tempus, inviting viewers to re-enter into “the plenary condition of the World’s beginning, the perfection of the ‘first instant’ before anything had been involved with the work of Time” (Eliade).
